Anthony hopes Goodwill tournament will improve boxing in region

The officials along with the pugilists competing in the three-day, four-nation, International Goodwill tournament paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Sport yesterday before the competition boxed off last night.

During the courtesy call, the Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony,

welcomed the contingents of St. Lucia, Trinidad and Jamaica and said that Guyana was happy to play

host to such an event which he hopes will improve the standard of boxing in the region.

The minister who also wished success to the combatants stated that Guyana would like to develop a training facility and invite boxers of the region to “come and train with us.”

He also encouraged the visitors to do some sightseeing.

The Simon Pures shortlisted to represent Guyana are Bert Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft, Ron Smith, Trevon King, Dennis Thomas,  Michael April, Stephen Nedd, Junior Henry, Delon Charles, Imran Khan and Clairmont Gibson, Dwon Thompson and Theresa London.

Lyndel’ the Russian’ Marcellil, Ron Bastien and Arthur Langelier will represent St. Lucia.

Trinidad’s team comprises Akmal Strode, Christian McDonald, Michael Alexander, Jean Paul Cooper, Aaron Prince and female in Chimere Taylor (75kg).

Patrick Sahadeo, Anthony Clarke, Kestna Davis and Michael Gardener are the boxers representing the ‘Land of Wood and Water’.

The tournament got underway last evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Twelve bouts were scheduled.
