Young and the Restless crowned Mashramani Cup champs

Young and the Restless were crowned the new 2014 Mash Cup champions after comprehensively defeating Rose Hall in the Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC) organised five-overs-a-side competition played in Berbice on Sunday.

Held for the second year, the tourney which was organized for Second Division teams in the East Canje/East Coast Berbice area, attracted 10 villages from across the Ancient County. The final encounter being reduced to two overs per team saw Rose Hall batting first and being restricted to 16 for 3 off their allotted 12 deliveries, to which the new champions knocked off the target in seven balls without losing a wicket. Young and the Restless brushed aside Young Warriors in their semi-final match. Batting first the Young Warriors made 61 without loss in five overs with Mortimer Fraser scoring an unbeaten 55. In reply Young and the Restless reached 62 for 2 in 4.4 overs comfortably clinching the game.

Rose Hall had drawn a bye to the final after getting past Canefield in a thrilling encounter after posting 52 for 5 off their five overs and  restricting Canefield to 48 for 2. After four overs Canefield were 44 without loss and were poised for victory but two dot balls at the start of the fifth over and a wicket off  the third delivery changed the game.

They needed six runs off the last ball but lost a wicket, giving Rose Hall a five-run win.

In the end the new champions carted off $60,000 plus a trophy while Rose Hall took away $30,000 with a trophy and third place finishers Young Warriors receiving $15,000.
