Caribs surge to 47-22 points win over GDF

A second half surge by the rampant Caribs enabled them to pull away from the Guyana Defence Force to earn a convincing 47-22 victory when the Bounty Farm 15s rugby tournament continued at the National Park yesterday.

Tries by Carl Lewis (two), Theo Henry (two), O’Neil Charles (two) Claudius Butts, Kevon David, Akeem Fraser and Butt’s conversion put paid to the soldiers in yesterday’s game.

Avery Corbin’s hat trick of tries along with Cloyd Prowell’s conversion and a Revon Williams try was not enough to march away with a win

Lewis opened the scoring in the 7th minute of the game, Henry then mirrored that achievement 15 minutes later to put the Caribs up 10-nil. Five minutes later however the muscular Corbin breached the Caribs’ defence. Corbin then again crossed the try-line on the stroke of half time to knot the scores at 10 apiece.

After a pep talk by Captain Henry, his chargers came out of the half with renewed vigour.

Henry lead from the front by recording a try in the first minute of the second half, then the rout was on.

Lewis padded the score line four minutes after, Butts then put his name on the score sheet three minutes after Lewis. Six minutes later, Kevon David joined the party.

Three minutes after David, Akeem Fraser then recorded a try.

Corbin briefly made the game interesting after recording his hat trick which was converted by Cloyd Prowell. However, Charles recorded a try three minutes after to put the Caribs up 42-17.

Revon Williams made the score more respectable with his try for GDF (40-22) but Charles scored again on a penalty try and Butts buried the conversion to put the nail in GDF’s coffin.

The tournament continues today at the same venue with UG Wolves facing the Pepsi Hornets. (Emmerson Campbell)
