Guyana reaches Caribbean Street Football Challenge semis

Team Guyana clinched a berth in the semi-final round, defeating both St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Lucia by identical scores when the Guinness Caribbean Street Football Challenge commenced in the Trinidad and Tobago on Friday.

Positioned in Group-A which also features Dominica, Guyana defeated St. Kitts and Nevis by a 2-1 score line in their opening fixture. Deon Alfred and James Meredith were the goal scorers for the local side, netting in the third and 13th minutes respectively.

In their second matchup of the group, the local boys overcame St. Lucia by the same score line. Alfred once again led the way for the Guyana outfit as he found the back of the net twice in the fifth and ninth minutes. Due to the win, Guyana have now clinched a berth in the semi-final round and will faceoff with the either Antigua and Barbuda or St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Prior to the commencement of the semi-final stage, Guyana will engage Dominica in the final group match.

In Group-B which consists of defending tournament champions Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda and Jamaica, the host nation will face off with either St. Lucia or St. Kitts and Nevis in the semi-final round, after winning their respective group stage matchups.

Winners of the event will pocket US$4,000 as well as a FIFA sanctioned coaching course for all members of the team. The second placed side will collect US$2,000 while the third placed finishes will collect US$1,000.
