St Mary’s High upsets Queenstown Secondary

St. Mary’s High upset Queenstown Secondary by a 6-4 score line when the fourth annual Digicel national U-18 knockout football championship continued yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.

Raphael Charles opened the scoring for the winners as he netted in the sixth minute. Andell Smith would double their lead as he found the back of the net with a 10th-minute strike. The score line would continue to balloon as Andrew Freeman scored compliments of an 18th-minute effort.

Lennox Cort would then make it 4-0 as he netted two minutes later. Akiel Forde would further increase their lead as he found the back of the net in the 54th minute. Queenstown Secondary would pull one back three minutes later as Jason Williams netted.

Williamson Dos Santos would reduce the deficit once more as he scored through a 73rd minute conversion. It would then become 5-3 as Kelsie Benjamin netted in the 74th minute. Queenstown would reduce the deficit to one as Benjamin found the back of the net in the 88th minute.

Sensing a possible comeback and conceding four goals on the trot, St. Mary’s would put the game to bed as Curtez Kellman netted in the 90th minute to break Queenstown hearts.

Over at the Ministry of Education ground, defending Georgetown conference champions St. George’s High defeated South Ruimveldt by a 2-0 score line. Orin Moore opened the scoring for the North Road unit as he found the back of the net in the 39th minute.

Adolph George would then seal the win for the St. George’s unit as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 42nd minute.

On Monday at the Eve Leary ground, North Ruimveldt Multilateral crushed Sophia Training Centre by a 6-1 margin. Jeremy Garrett led the way for the winners with a hat trick in the 18th, 31st and 42nd minutes respectively.

Contributing with solo strikes in the 11th, 48th and 70th minutes respectively were Tyrese Rowley, Carl Griffith and Shamar McPherson. On target in the loss in the 57th minute was Serine Daniels.

The action continues today with three divisional matchups across three venues. In the Region Three conference, Leonora Secondary will tackle Endeavour Secondary from 15:30hrs at the Uitvlugt community ground.

Over at the Beterverwagting ground, Ann’s Grove Secondary will oppose Buxton Youth Development from 15:30hrs in a Region Four showdown while Upper Corentyne Secondary will engage Vryman’s Erven Secondary from the same time at the Kildonan Ground in a Region Six affair.
