Griffith, Bacchus looking to create fireworks at CPL

Guyana Amazon Warriors duo Trevon Griffith and Robin Bacchus are upbeat about this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament and are looking to make the most of the team’s upcoming encampment ahead of bowl off time which occurs in a few weeks.

When Stabroek Sports caught up with the two left-handers on Friday, Griffith said camp was “Another opportunity to be around experienced players” and he aims to use the occasion to learn from them and further condition himself. The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) player said despite not playing much cricket since returning from Trinidad and Tobago where he had a good season before being recalled to the national side for the Regional tournament, the lead up so far has been good and his confidence is brimming as a result.

“Bugsy”, as Griffith is fondly called, played one game last year but is focused on playing a major role for his team in this year’s competition. “Last year I played one game so I’m looking forward to playing more games this year and hopefully grasp any opportunity I get with both hands.” Griffith reiterated that he was “happy to be a part of the team again” as it is a “big opportunity.”

Asked about his thoughts regarding this year’s CPL Griffith said, “There’s been IPL and Test cricket happening so the fans are waiting for CPL and I think this year will be much bigger and better. He also noted the talent of his teammates Martin Guptill, Chris Barnwell, Krishmar Santokie, Sunil Narine and others whom he said are “great players and match-winners.”

Meanwhile, 25 year-old debutant Bacchus said he plans to capitalize on the encampment period to become “fitter and stronger” as he believes that the Warriors will be a force to be reckoned with once the tournament bowls off. “I’m very excited and looking forward to be among some of the best cricketers in the world and eager to learn from them, while I will also use the opportunity to make a name for myself,” he said.

The Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) opener who will debut alongside club-mate Leon Johnson as the two new faces in the team reiterated that he is confident of the team’s chances of winning.

“I think we have a great chance of going all the way this year,” he said. “The team is well balanced and filled with talent, it’s just a matter of application because the calibre of players we have is far more than enough to take the title this year,” Bacchus said.

The duo were among the group of players encamped at the stadium and will continue preparations until they travel overseas on July 8 for their first match against the Antigua Hawksbill. (Clifton Ross)
