Guyana’s chess players blank Burundi 4-0

Guyana’s chess players yesterday defeated Burundi 4-0 on day four of the 41st World Chess Championships in Tromso, Norway.

Anthony Drayton, rated 1828, who drew his previous match on Board One, scored his first win of the championships. Drayton playing with the white pieces, defeated Yves Ndikumana who resigned after Drayton threatened to win a rook with a pawn check of his king which was placed on h6. Ronuel Greenidge, who had the distinction of being the first Guyanese to record a win at the championships, scored his second win against Tony Nininahazwe.

Greenidge playing with the black pieces ended a pawn up in the end game which forced his unrated opponent to resign.

Haifeng Su 1724 played with the white pieces against Deo Ntagasigumwami, 1817, who rallied for all of 60 moves before finding himself two pawns down, called it quits.

On Board Four Maria Varona Thomas, 1777, played with the black pieces against the unrated Jean Boscoe Rwamavubi and won after only 38 moves with the threat of checkmate or the loss of substantial pieces looming.
