The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday launched the Scotiabank Kiddy Summer cricket camp at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground.

The camp, which will run until Thursday, features 66 participants ages 8-12 from the Georgetown, East Bank and West Coast of Demerara, areas. Simultaneously a camp is being held in Essequibo that will conclude on Friday while the East Coast of Demerara segment will begin on the 23rd August and end on August 26th.

According to the GCB’s Territorial Development Officer (TDO) Colin Stuart, the camp seeks to impart education of the physical and technical aspect of the game.

“It is expected that at the end of the camp the campers will be equipped with knowledge of the game that can assist in the development of their individual skill,” said Stuart.

Brian Hackett, Branch Manager of Scotiabank Robb Street, said since its inauguration in 2001, Kiddy Cricket has made significant progress, being played in at least 13 territories in the Caribbean. Such an intervention has enabled the participation of more than 1100 schools, with an involvement of more than 65000 students.”

He said that he was elated that the GCB took up the initiative for its inaugural camp.

Also present at the launching was Marcel Hutson, Assistant Chief Education Officer and Director of Sport Neil Kumar.

Hutson said he was happy at the opportunity to speak to the youngsters after commending Scotiabank for its initiative.

“The hallmark of good sportsmen relies on their attitudes,” he said, making reference to Shivnarine Chanderpaul as an athlete, whose discipline has assisted his elevation.

He added that the players need to remain focussed over the next four days because their talent could be identified by the coaches.

Kumar praised the GCB and Scotiabank for their efforts and said that the crop of youths was very fortunate to be blessed with such opportunity.

The camp fever will move to Berbice on August 26 and will run until the penultimate day of the month.
