Stewartville Gunners, Vergenoegen All-Stars, New Road Eagles and Woodcrest all registered opening night victories when the Stag Beer Sponsored West Demerara Inter-Village 5-aside Football tourney commenced on Friday at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac.
In the tournament opener, Stewartville Gunners defeated Woodcrest by a 3-0 score line. Kwame Hyman opened the scoring for the winners with a strike in the 30th second of the opening minute. He would double his tally 26 seconds later to put his side 2-0 ahead.
The second matchup of the evening saw Vergenoegen All-Stars edging Shattaville Pacesetters 1-0. Orlanzo Henry separated the two sides with a strike in the first minute of the matchup.
In the third slated fixture, New Road Eagles edged highly favoured Tuschen Up-Top Youths by a 1-0 margin. Paul Rodney netted the fixture’s lone goal as he found the back of the net through an eight minute conversion.
In the battle of the earlier losers, Woodcrest defeated Shattaville Pacesetters by a 4-2 margin in the final matchup of the evening.
The tournament is slated to continue on August 27th. Winners of the event will be awarded with $200,000 while second, third and fourth placed finishes will pocket $100,000, $75,000 and $25,000 respectively.
