Hornets hold nerve to sting game UG outfit

The Hornets ruggers used their skill and experience and held their nerve to come from behind and sting a game UG outfit, 29-14 when the GRFU 10s league continued yesterday at the National Park.

National captain, Ryan Gonsalves and fellow national players Christopher Singh and Rickford Cummings as well as their second half defense were instrumental in the victory.

Singh who recorded a hatrick of tries was complimented by the right boot of Gonsalves who nailed three conversions and buried a penalty.

Cummings also chipped in with a try to pad the scoreline.

A try by Oesi McKenzie and a Godfrey Broomes conversion got the UG Wolves out to a 7-nil lead.

The fleet footed Broomes then recorded a try of his own and another conversion to put the students up 14-nil. However, the Hornets Saran Wrap defense nuzzled the wolf pack for the remainder of the game which allowed them to clawed back for the win.

The rugged GDF team were also in the winner’s row, recording a victory over the Theo Henry-led Caribs.

Captain Cloyd Prowell’s men marched to a 52-34 victory to keep the Caribs winless in the competition.

Patrick King put on a sprinting display that would make Usain Bolt proud.

King blessed with blinding foot speed, recorded three tries, one from midfield by eluding Caribs’ defenders who looked like they were moving in slow motion compared to fleet footed King.

National player, Joseph Rahaman (two) along with Rodwell Hutson, Jermaine Jacobs, Elijah Harrison (one apiece) also recorded tries for GDF.

Prowell bumped the score line by converting six tries.

Akeem Fraser (two tries) Keon Davids (two tries), Andrew Jarvis (one try) and Henry (a try and two conversions) were the scorers for the Caribs.

Rugby action continues on Saturday from 15:00hrs at the same venue. (Emmerson Campbell)
