Republicans dominate opening night of GABA Intermediate boxing card

The Republican Boxing Gym had reason to make noise Saturday night after winning eight fights against the formerly formidable GDF Gym when the two-night Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Intermediate competition boxed off at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre ground.

Under floodlights and amidst loud drumming from a large contingent of supporters, the pugilists from Camp and Durban Streets made a mockery of the GDF defence wining six of the eight bouts between the two gyms by TKOs. It was a just reward for Republican coach Wincel Thomas who later warned GDF coach Terrence Poole of more surprises to come in the National Open.

Flyweight Kevin Allicock started the ball rolling for the Republicans with a savage putting down of Arthur Seppio.

The referee was forced to stop the fight in round two. Bantamweights Delon Naitram and Steffon Andrews then chalked up two more victories for the Republicans against the GDF.

Naitram’s opponent Jamal Mona lost by a TKO in round two after sustaining and injury to his right shoulder, rendering him unable to continue the contest. Andrews brushed aside Quacy Semple in the second round also.

Spurred on by the two stoppages the volume of the Republican drumming increased.

Here is a summary of the other fights on Saturday night:

Phillips then returned to stop Devon Thomas of Rose Hall Jammers in the second round
