Gunners to face Showstoppers in Stag Beer final

Stewartville Gunners and Showstoppers will faceoff in the final of the Stag Beer ‘West Side’ 5-a-side football tourney today, following semi-final victories over DeKindren and New Road Eagles respectively on Friday at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac.

The finals of the event will be held at the same venue with winning team slated to pocket $200,000. In the first semi-final, the Gunners shot down DeKindren by a 3-1 score line. Ulric Bourne gave DeKindren the early lead as he broke the deadlock in the 10th minute.

However his strike would be erased in the 21st minute of the second period through a Dwayne Charles effort. The lead would then change sides as Orette Stephenson found the back of the net for the Gunners three minutes later.

Stewartville would then seal the win in the 38th minute as Donald Bobb netted. In the second semi-final encounter, Showstopper clipped the wings of New Road Eagles by a 6-2 margin compliments of a Dexroy Adams helmet trick.

Eagles flew into the early lead through a Simon Emmanuel second minute conversion. Eagles who were unbeaten up until now, surrendered their advantage as Adams equalized with a 16th minute effort.

Showstoppers would then take the lead eight minutes later as Adams sealed his double. The score line would then become 3-1 as Adams netted his hat trick, placing his effort to the back of the net one minute later. Not wanting to go down without a fight, Eagles would cut the deficit to one in the 27th minute as Ravi Chand etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. However that would be the closest they would get to the score as Anthony Sancho made it 4-2, lashing his effort into the net in the 36th minute.

Adams would then increase their lead once more, completing his helmet trick with a finish down the middle of the net two minutes later. The score line would then be sealed in the final moments of the 40 minute fixture as Winston Johnson scored.
