A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) says it conducted a two-day community walk-about in the Laing Avenue/Sideline Dam, East La Penitence area over the weekend.
APNU in a release said that several teams were led by its leader David Granger and included several APNU Members of Parliament, Regional Councillors, the Mayor of Georgetown and members of the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM).
Granger called attention to the squalor, lack of proper housing and poor or non-existent infrastructure. The release said that he linked it all to the People’s Progressive Party’s refusal to hold local government elections.
Granger said that the PPP damage to local democratic organs over the past two decades, especially the hostile attitude towards Georgetown, has hamstrung the prospects for economic development of urban communities. APNU said it is convinced that the holding of local government elections is essential for the restoration of local democracy and the re-energizing of local communities and economies.
