National draughts c/ships commence today

- Pooranmall looking to defend A Class, 100 squares titles

National champion Khemraj Pooranmall will be looking to defend both his A Class and 100 Squares titles at the Guyana Draughts Association (GDA) National Championships which commence today with the B Class event.

The championships, sponsored by the Berbice Bridge, P&P Insurance Brokers limited, NCE Screen Printers Limited and the National Sports Commission is being held at the National Gymnasium.

A new winner will be crowned in the B Class event since last year’s winner Mark Braithwaite is no longer eligible to compete in that division.

The B Class event is open to all players except those classified as A Class players.

Pooranmall will begin the defence of his A Class title next Sunday and is expected to face stiff opposition from the likes of Jairam, Carlton Simon, Lloyd Cumberbatch and Braithwaite.

The 100 squares tournament will be held September 28 at the same venue.

Registration of players will take place from 9.30am this morning.

Meanwhile, the Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) on Thursday handed over two trophies to the GDA following a request from the association.
