UG Wolves win Banks Sevens Club C/ships

The UG Wolves ran away with the Banks Sevens Club Championship trophy, beating the Yamaha Caribs 26-24 in a pulsating final yesterday at the National Park.

Known to squander second half leads, the student ruggers had a role reversal by clawing their way back from a 12-5 second half deficit to howl to victory against the Theo Henry-led outfit.

Tries by star winger and tournament MVP, Ryan Dey (two), Philbert Joseph and Osei McKenzie   coupled with two conversions by Godfrey Broomes enabled the vastly improved team to brush aside the Caribs.

20140922BanksMcKenzie also chipped in with a conversion to earn the Wolves their first Banks Sevens championship.

Akeem Fraser’s double, a try by Andrew Jarvis, Henry’s conversion as well as a try and conversion by Carl Lewis was not enough for the Caribs to defeat last year’s tournament runners up.

“The victory for our team means a lot “said UG’s captain Rondell McArthur in a post-match interview with media operatives.

“This is the first time we won this title and it was very challenging because all these teams especially the Caribs came here today hungry for the championship, I must take my hat off to the guys, we have improve tremendously under Coach Larry Adonis”.

Before the final, they were tag matches involving the female clubs. The Hornets outfit emerged winners of that segment. (Emmerson Campbell)
