Jamaica court halts plans to send tennis team

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC- A Supreme Court Judge here has stopped tennis officials from proceeding with plans to send a team to a major tournament in Mexico next month until a case brought by two disgruntled parents is heard.

The ruling occurred during a preliminary hearing on Wednesday after Tennis Jamaica decided to forego national trials for the International Tennis Federation (ITF) 12 and Under Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) Team Championships set for Mexico, November 1-7.

Joe Dibbs and Joseph Azar, whose two children have not been selected, are trying to convince the court to force Tennis Jamaica to dismantle its four-member team.

The team was named on results from a St Lucia qualifier but the parents say local trials must precede team selection as was done last year and have accused Tennis Jamaica of nepotism and conflicts of interest.

Their children Emma Dibbs and Johnny Azar are both ranked number one in the under-12 and are in the top two in the under-14 age groups.

They secured their spots through trials last year after advancing from the pre-qualifier held in Jamaica.
