National U19 team come off the canvas to draw with Old Fort

The Guyana National U-19 male hockey team came from two goals down to hold Old Fort to a 2-2 stalemate when day two of the GT&T National Indoor Championships continued on Tuesday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue

Askofu Simon gave Old Fort the early lead in the third minute, placing his effort past the opposing custodian down the middle of the goal, from within the left side of the shooting arc.

Chris Low would then increase their lead 20 minutes later, glancing his effort with his back to the goal down the middle of the net to beat the onrushing custodian, after latching onto a long pass from his defensive third.

The National U-19 unit would then pull one back in the 27th minute as Leon Bacchus etched his name on the scorer’s sheet with a simple finish to the lower left hand corner, after receiving a right sided pass just outside the left side of the upright. Aroydy Branford would then earn his side a share of the spoils, rifling his powerfully struck effort down the middle of the goal from the centre of the arc, following a penalty corner attempt.

In the Ladies section, Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Tigers defeated fellow club-mates GCC Spice by a 5-2 score line.

Trisha Woodroffe led the experienced Tigers with a double in the third and 17th minutes while Ashley DeGroot, Tiffany Solomon and Aaliyah Gordon netted in the sixth, 10th and 12th minutes respectively.

On target for the losers was Sonia Jardine in the 13th and 24th minutes respectively. The second matchup of the section saw Hikers defeating Old Fort by a 1-0 margin through of a Maria Munroe fifth minute conversion.

The veteran’s section saw Old Fort and GCC playing a 2-2 draw. Stephen Fernandes and Devin Hooper gave the Bourda based side the early lead through goals in the third and eighth minutes correspondingly.

However, Dwayne Allen and John Abraham would earn a point for Old Fort as they found the back of the net in the 23rd and 30th minutes respectively. In second division section, GCC defeated Saints 4-2 while Old Fort blanked Kingston Hockey Club by a 3-0 score line.

The action is expected to continue at the same venue tomorrow with six fixtures. In the opening fixture at 17:30hrs, the National u-19 females will faceoff with GCC Spice while Hikers will match skills with GCC Tigers at 18:10hrs in the second matchup of the female section.

Hikers will then tackle Kingston from 18:50hrs in the second division while the National u-19 males will oppose Saints in a first division showdown at 19:30hrs. The fifth match of the evening will then witness Hikers engaging GCC in a veteran’s fixture at 20:20hrs.

In the final fixture of the night, Old Fort will faceoff with GCC in a first division showdown at 21:00hrs.
