The feature 30-lap race of the 17th annual Troy Humphrey Memorial event was called off yesterday due to some cyclists blocking the circuit of the National Park in protest, somewhat overshadowing the otherwise successful fixture.
National cyclist and former Roraima Bikers Club rider, Marlon Williams, was told by club president, Brian Allen at the line that he was disqualified from riding the event after he failed to return the club kit.
Allen’s words sparked an angry protest championed by Robin Persaud who influenced all but Alanzo Greaves, Junior Niles and Warren ‘40’ McKay from mounting their saddles.
The final event was subsequently called off after one lap and the prize money was shared among the three wheelsmen.
Williams, who was the defending champion of the event, allegedly hurled expletives at an executive of the club on Friday while reiterating his reluctance to return the kit valued at approximately $30,000.
The latest cycling dustup comes on the heels of Team Coco’s withdrawal of the Five Stage road race last month which led to their banishment of the Digicel Road Race.
On the bright side of things, Team Coco’s riders did saddle up for yesterday’s event and their most decorated rider, Raynauth Jeffrey will represent Guyana at the CAC Games in Mexico later this month along with Geron Williams.
