Male Suriname Volleyball top team Yelyco Sunday night outplayed local side Achievers in last weekend’s third annual Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) in collaboration with GUYOIL/Tradewind Tankers International invitational festival played at the National Gymnasium.
The Dutch side inflicted a 3-0 whipping on the local club side in the men’s final winning 25-13, 25-12 and 25-11.
Both Achievers and Yelyco reached the final by defeating Port Mourant and a French Guiana side.
In the female final, the female volleyball players from Suriname scored a thrilling 3-2 win over opponents French Guiana.
Suriname drew first blood after clinching the first round 28-26 but the French Guiana side rebounded to win set two 25-22 while the Dutch managed to dominate the third set 25-23. The female French players did not buckle under the pressure of being 2-1 down and managed to win set four 25-22 before Suriname comprehensively thumped them in the final set, 25-18.
National Coach Levi Need during brief remarks said that he will not make any excuses about his team losing in the final 3-0.
“We played well given the circumstances. We performed well as a team,” he added.
The former national player indicated that it would be back to the drawing board for the players.
The winning male team Yelyco, walked away with quite a few individual awards after Keven Sporkslede won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Attacker awards while Kurban Raftar was named Best Receiver and Dion Brunings Best Setter.
