New champ to be crowned

— as Alpha United battles Riddim Squad in Futsal final

A new champion will be crowned today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United and Riddim Squad do battle in the grand finale of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Stag Beer Futsal Championship.

Known for their expertise on the outdoor version, Alpha United has clearly been a revelation throughout the tourney and will start the final as favourites following comprehensive wins over the Guyana Defence Force, Fruta Conquerors and Western Tigers in the earlier rounds.

Their ability to seamlessly adapt into the shorter version of the game is clearly evident by their dominant attacking displays as they have registered an astonishing event-leading 33 goals to date.

With a goals per game ratio of 6.6 and only six goals conceded so far in the event, the ‘Hammers’, led by their foursome of Travis Grant, Aldair Paredes, Dwight Peters and Daniel Wilson, will be confident of adding another title to their already laden trophy cabinet.

Despite the fact they do not possess the titles or names of their illustrious antagonists, Mocha-based side Riddim Squad will not be an easy task to overcome. Built on team chemistry from their abundance of family relations throughout, their physical nature and all-round compactness makes them a very formidable unit on either side of the playing area. While defensively they have only conceded six goals, offensively they have thrived, registering a capable 24 goals across five games at a ratio of 4.8 goals per game.

With the ability to score led by the likes of Amos Ramsay and Sceyon Hope while maintaining defensive structure orchestrated by the duo of Lyliton and Steffon Ramsay, Riddim Squad are no doubt convinced they can upset the `Hammers’ to clinch the title.

In the third place playoff, West Ruimveldt giants Western Tigers will tackle Santos FC. Winners of the event will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy while the second placed side will receive $200,000 and the correspondingly trophy.

The third-placed side will walk away with $125,000 and trophy while the fourth-positioned finishers will pocket $75,000 and the respective trophy. On the individual section, prizes will be given to the event’s most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goalkeeper.

Prior to the commencement of the third place matchup and finale, several exhibitions matchups will be hosted.
