Central American and Caribbean Games …Guyana’s hopes dashed in squash tourneys

Guyana continued to leave a trail of disappointment in its wake in the squash category of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, when the team went down to Colombia in straight sets 2-0 in the semi-final round of the ladies doubles tourney yesterday.

Ashley DeGroot and Ashley Khalil quickly fell behind when they lost the opening set 11-2 to Karol Gonzalez and Laura Tovar at the Leyes de Reforma Sports Complex. The loss was sealed in the second set when the Colombians defeated the local ladies 11-1.

Guyana had earlier qualified for the semi-final round after defeating the Barbadian duo Nadia McCarthy and Kaitlin Jordan in straight sets 11-3 and 11-4 at the same location on Tuesday.

In the men’s doubles category, Guyanese Sunil Seth and Jason-Ray Khalil were eliminated in the first round by the Cayman Islands duo Julian Jervis and Alexander Frazier in straight sets 11-7 and 11-3 on Monday at the same venue.

A similar ending obtained in the individual category, as both male and female participants failed to make it past the quarterfinal round.

In the men’s division, Seth was defeated in his quarterfinal match-up on Monday in straight sets 11-1, 11-1 and 11-3 by eventual winner Cesar Salazar of Mexico while Khalil went down to Jamaica’s Christopher Binnie 11-9, 11-6 and 11-7 in the first round on Sunday.

On the distaff side, lone participant DeGroot was defeated in her quarterfinal match by eventual champion Samantha Teran of the host nation, in straight sets 11-5, 11-8 and 11-7 on Monday.
