Leopold Street seals spot in Guinness knockout round

Former title holders Leopold Street sealed their spot in the knockout round, edging South Sophia 1-0 in a must-win final group fixture when the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown leg continued yesterday at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.

Okeene Fraser netted the game’s only goal in the third minute as his right-sided corner kick took a deflection off the leg of the final defender and rolled into the left-hand corner of the net. With the win, Leopold Street move to six points from three games.

South Sophia for their showing finish the group stage on three points from as many matches. Also improving their chances of a spot in the knockout stage was Cross Street who defeated Charlestown 3-2 on sudden death kicks after normal time finished 2-2.

With a winner unable to be found at the end of normal time, Charlestown would take a 1-0 in the penalty shoot-out as they netted from mark while Cross Street missed.

The scores would then become level in the second round of the shoot-out as Charlestown failed to hit the mark while Ronaldo Dover scored for Cross Street.

The matchup would then go to the sudden death format as both sides missed from the mark during the third round. It would then remain 1-1 in the fourth round as both units missed once more from the mark.

The unpredictability of the shoot-out would continue as the score moved to 2-2 in the fifth round with both sides netting. However Cross Street would eventually prevail in the sixth round of the sudden death kicks as Troy Heyliger missed for Charlestown while Samuel Hunte converted.

With the win, Cross Street finish their campaign on six points from three matches. They will now await the outcome of the West Front Road and Alexander Village fixture to determine if they will progress to the next round. An Alexander Village loss would seal their berth to the next round.

Charlestown for their efforts, finish the group stage on zero points from three games. In the earlier minutes of the game, Ronaldo Dover gave the eventual winners the early lead as he netted 21 seconds into the fixture with a strike to the centre of the goal from the right side.

Charlestown would quickly answer in the shape of Heyliger who finished to the left hand corner in the fourth minute from the centre of the field, after collecting a left-sided Andre Trotz pass from the left side.

Trotz would then push Charlestown into the lead in the 14th minute, muscling his effort down the centre of the goal from inside the area, after latching onto a left-sided pass.

However Cross Street would push the matchup into the penalty shoot-out realm as Hunte netted to the left corner one minute later, after receiving a left-sided pass following a one-on-one situation with the final defender.

In the opening fixture, South Ruimveldt ended their tournament on a high note as they defeated Riverview 2-0 via walkover.
