Mixed fortunes for female squash players at CAC games

Team Guyana suffered mixed fortunes on the opening day of the female team squash championship when the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games continued yesterday at the Leyes de Reforma Sports Complex.

The local ladies went down to Colombia by a 3-0 margin in their second Pool-B encounter only after defeating Jamaica by an identical score line in their opening fixture of the campaign.

Catalina Pelaez defeated Ashley Khalil in straight sets 11-8, 11-2 and 11-8 to give Colombia a 1-0 lead. Laura Tovar would then make it 2-0 for Colombia as she defeated Mary Fung-A-Fat 11-4, 11-7 and 11-7. The loss would then be completed as Karol Gonzalez downed Ashley DeGroot 11-2, 11-5 and 11-8.

In the opening engagement with Jamaica, Khalil defeated Alyssa Mullings in straight sets 11-8, 11-8 and 11-6 to give Guyana a 1-0 lead. Fung-A-Fat would then increase their advantage in the second matchup as she made light work of Tracy Binnie 11-4, 11-4 and 11-6.

The win would then be sealed in the third fixture as DeGroot overcame Mary Mahfood 11-9, 3-11, 11-9, 8-11 and 11-5. Guyana will now faceoff with Barbados in their final group matchup today.
