Taylor Fernandes off to perfect start

Taylor Fernandes overcame Alex Cheeks by a 3-1 margin in their Category-B showdown when the 2014 Farfan and Mendes Junior Christmas tourney started on Wednesday at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts.

Fernandes took the early lead 1-0 lead, winning the first set 11-8. Cheeks then battled back to level proceedings, claiming the second set by an identical score line. However, Fernandes took back the lead in the third set, winning by an 11-7 margin. She then unequivocally closed out the match, rallying to win 10 straight points after Cheeks was leading 4-0 to clinch the fourth set 11-5.

In the second match-up of the division, Larissa Wiltshire crushed Daniel Islam in straight sets 11-4, 11-5, and 11-2.

The Category-C slated fixtures saw Rebecca Low defeating Maya Collins 11-4, 11-4 and 11 – 5 while Anthony Islam downed Makeda Harding 11-7, 11-6 and 11-4.

In Category-D, Gianna Carpenter defeated Dominic Collins 11-3, 11-6 and 11-3 while Michael Alphonso overcame Ethan Jonas in a five-set thriller 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12 and 11-8. The third match-up saw Demetrius De Abreu defeating Lucas Jonas via walkover.

In the Category-E match-ups Madison Fernandes brushed aside Nadine Jairam 11-7 and 11-8 while Kirsten Gomes crushed Daniel Lowe 11-4 and 11-4.

In Category-F, Haley Carpenter lost to Nathan Rahaman 10-12, 11-6 and 10-12 while James Mekdeci defeated Aliyah Persaud 11-3 and 11-6. Jason Gomes then blanked Liam Carpenter 11-6, 11-5 in their Category-G matchup and Chad De Abreu lost to Kamir Khan 1-11 and 1-11.

Meanwhile, in Category-H, Mohyryan Baksh defeated Isabella Ramjohn 11-2, 11-2; Paige Fernandes downed Teija Edwards 11-2, 11-6 and Geovanna Dos Santos lost to Beau Fernandes 9-11 and 9-11.
