5 reasons to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier now

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the sequel to the original 2011 film and features the return of Chris Evans as the iconic Marvel Comics superhero Steve Rogers aka Captain America who must now take on a new villain, the Winter Soldier, who not only brings destruction and death, but also a painful and shocking secret from Rogers’ past.

What we get is a high intensity action-adventure with all the intrigue of a James Bond film and the jaw dropping special effects of 2012’s Avengers. Here are 5 reasons to see it now:

1. Nick Fury finally gets the fight scene he deserves. The Captain America sequel delivers on all levels. We finally get to see Samuel L Jackson kick butt as Nick Fury in a rip-roaring action sequence that allows Jackson to engage in real hand-to-hand combat that we haven’t seen from the character since The Avengers. Without divulging any spoilers, Nick Fury comes face to face with the enemy force threatening his Shield Agency and what we get is a stunning sequence in which Jackson’s physical prowess is put on full display. The shocks never end as Fury fights for his life in a truly jaw dropping and violent action scene. Casting Jackson as Nick Fury is one of the most inspired casting decisions in recent memory and The Winter Soldier finally showcases how terrific Jackson is as the one-eyed hero.

2. Steve Rogers and the Black Widow have amazing chemistry. Hinted at in The Avengers, Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Natalia Romanova aka Black Widow have a strong sexual tension sprinkled with naughty banter that is amazing to watch. The banter is cranked up to the top notch in the Winter Soldier as the two characters try every avenue to deny their strong attraction; what is most interesting about the on-screen couple is that they are opposites with Captain America being the all-American boy-next-door, while the Black Widow exudes sex appeal, aided well by her skin-tight cat suit. Even in their high energy action sequences the two characters demonstrate a strong physical chemistry with Scarlet Johansson and Chris Evans providing their best performances.

3. The Falcon soars! I have been a fan of the Falcon character since discovering The Avengers comic book and I was hesitant about his appearance in the Captain America sequel since his metallic bird-like wings and ability to fly would call for massive, creative special effects. The hero is also the first African-America superhero to appear in mainstream comics so a lot was riding on his first-ever feature film appearance. They got it right! Anthony Mackie, best known for his role in 8 Mile, is fantastic as Falcon providing wise-cracking banter with Evan’s Captain America that is on spot with what fans of the comic book expect. But what truly brought the character to life are the action sequences in which Falcon utilizes his wing pack for some truly jaw-dropping special effects. As Falcon aids Captain America and the Black Widow to fight against the new enemy and the formidable Winter Soldier, the audience is treated to awe-inspiring flight sequences in which Falcon dodges everything from missiles to falling sky-scrapers. What I particularly liked about the Falcon is the filmmakers’ ability to seamlessly blend the live-action stunt work by Mackie with computer generated special effects. The Falcon’s sequences alone are well worth the ticket price.

4. Evans just keeps getting better. When last have you seen an action-adventure in which the protagonist consistently proves why he’s the one you shouldn’t take your eyes off of? Like Jackson as Nick Fury, Evans as Captain America is truly inspired casting as the actor not only looks like the iconic hero but his physical aptitude on screen will take your breath away. Another amazing achievement is that filmmakers relied on hand-to-hand combat as much as computer generated sequences which showcased Evans’s ability to take on all aspects of the physically demanding Captain America role. Evans is a wonder to watch as he takes on his new foe, the Winter Soldier, and despite their battles being highly physical, the physiological ramifications of discovering the Winter Soldier’s real identity resonate well with an emotional performance by Evans. The actor does the iconic hero justice once again.

5. You don’t have to be a fan of the series to enjoy Winter Soldier. Even non-fans will salivate at the amazing action sequences, awe-inspiring special effects and tour de force acting. Everyone in this film is at the top of their game. Johansson is visually stunning as Black Window and her intense action sequences provide enough female empowerment to excite feminist groups for hundreds of years. Veteran actor Robert Redford as the stalwart senior leader of Shield, Alexander Pierce, brings high intensity drama and intrigue and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier brings a heart-breaking humanity to the character yet terrifies with a truly foreboding presence. The film is a well-packaged theoretical delight that no fan of action-adventures should miss. It is indeed well worth the ticket price as the high-intense adventure is on-par with 2012’s The Avengers.
