Just Jackie

When Lisa Punch was on centre stage a few months ago, a lot of questions were asked in connection with the local support given to local artists. My contribution towards the arts in particular to musicians was very minimal and if I am to honest there wasn’t much until Lisa Punch. She urged the audience at the Come Alive Network INC (CANI) Youth Day Conference not to wait until something happens to give back but to do it today.

I find myself fixated on waiting for things to happen and paying attention to them then. It’s something that I’m working very hard to change for the sake of my personal development.

I have decided to feature musical personalities who I follow in relation to their fashion identity.

I personally find that artists in Guyana have a troubling time to fit their style to their music. There is one person however, who has managed to do it. She goes by the name Jackie Jaxx; her real name is Jackie Hanover. I met Jackie a short while after working with Lisa Punch, but prior to this I had seen her casually. Jackie has a striking, strong image that not many appreciate.

You might not listen to her music, but her name or her image probably comes up in conversation. Whether you like her or not she still managed to get you talking about her, which is very important when it comes to music, fashion and branding.

To pull something like this off in Guyana where we can be considered a closed society in terms of dressing, is very remarkable. Jackie dresses in what she likes and I think for a music personality this is a very important. People connect with her and she can’t have the same style as the rest of us. If anything, she has created her own style; just like Lady Gaga in her cured beef dress and Nicki Minaj in her rainbow weave (when she had it).

Whether or not you like her style you have to appreciate and respect anyone who pulls off anything so different and does it with so much pride.

Jackie knows how I feel about her personal style but she also knows how much respect I have for her for sticking to something that she likes. You hardly find persons with their own personalities and who are happy in their skin. While fashions will come and go, the most stylish fashion asset is and will always be confidence. It makes anything look good. I think this one of the main reasons why I’m so drawn to Jackie as an individual. I desperately need to find more self-confidence to wear some more avant-garde/Anna Dello Russo pieces. Thanks for being a real person Jackie.

Here are is a photo of a shoot I did with Jackie Hanover for my website www.online-runway.com. A lot of people don’t get to see Jackie as Jackie because she adds a lot to her image to make herself stand out. We got her hair dyed, texturized and styled for the shoot .Jackie has very thick hair so it looks very healthy and thick without extensions. Renee Chester Thompson from Bromeliad Make-Up studio gave Jackie a very clean and natural makeover. She tried to keep it as natural as possible. There weren’t any fake lashes used as well. Hope you like the shoot as much as I do. Thank you Jackie Jaxx for being your own person. I really admire you girl.
