The umbrella plant

Schefflera arboricola commonly called the umbrella plant originated in Taiwan.

Its unique, pinwheel foliage makes it a suitable indoor plant and it has a tropical look. The leaves are composed of ovate leaflets arranging themselves as a fan. There are several varieties of this plant. However, the most popular ones are Schefflera arboricola variegata with its green and yellow leaves and Schefflera arboricola with its green shiny leaves. There is also a dwarf variety.

Garden (Peggy Chin)Mist leaves occasionally with water, especially on hot and sunny days. You can wipe the leaves with a soft cloth if they become too dusty. You can also apply some Miracle Gro Leaf Shine on the leaves and gently shine them with a soft cloth for that shiny effect.

Plant Schefflera in well-drained potting soil in individual pots. They are ideal as display plants with a showroom effect. Pinch the top of the Schefflera plant to allow it to branch out.

Fertilize Schefflera with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every 2 weeks.

Schefflera can also be grown outdoors. Plant Schefflera in a semi-shaded area with good light but not direct sun light. Water moderately. Having adapted well in Guyana and the Caribbean, it makes a lovely patio hedge.

Until next week, happy gardening.
