Lighter Sides to the Campaigns

By Taurus – The Heckler

  • THE CONSTITUTION – Serious? Humorous?

If Taurus doesn’t laugh, he may cry at the goings-on during this Silly Season of Electioneering 2015. What an interesting perspective from a SN letter writer Rafiq T. Khan.

This elector explains his personal principle with respect to just why he will not be voting for anybody. That voter – Mr. Khan – argues powerfully that the Guyana Constitution through Article 155 (a), instructs that no person shall be qualified for election as a member of the National Assembly, “who is, by virtue of his own act, under any acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or state.”

As Mr. Khan writes, when you put up your hands and make the Citizen’s Oath to become a documented paper American, you are swearing, “acknowledging, allegiance, obedience and adherence to a foreign State” – the USA or Canada, England, Australia or The Bahamas, etc., you cannot, should not, be a member of Guyana’s National Assembly, one component of its Parliament.

Taurus is in agreement with elector Khan. Those with other citizenships and foreign passports are still Guyanese but should not be on Party Nomination Lists to become Parliamentarians here. Unless they give up their foreign status!! Will they? Well Taurus is going to make a seminal Court Case out of this issue. The all-wise, over-worked Judge of our Constitutional Court – the ubiquitous, Honourable Ian Chang – will have to rule, before or after May 11.

  • MADNESS AND ENGLISH

Taurus then checked both Articles 155 and 53 thoroughly. They spell out who qualify to be elected to Parliament. Taurus will advise Constitutional Reformers to add a psychologist and psychiatrist to the Assembly because 155 says that you “can’t be certified to be insane or of unsound mind” as an M.P. Now tell me if our Assembly never had its fair share of outright crazies in the past. This must not happen past May 11.

Then article 53 advises that to qualify for election to the Assembly a person 18 and over must be “able to speak and read the English language” with a certain degree of proficiency…” Oh me Lawd! English? Some-a-dem kyan even taak Creolese prapally, much mo English! (Taurus will try to get on a List as a Late Entry.)

  • APNU-AFC OFFERS PROFUSE GRATITUDE TO THE PPP/C

Taurus could not believe his ears and eyes. The Opposition opponents (APNU-AFC) actually offering heartfelt, outright thanks to the governing party they are ‘busing out of power! Why? Well the Release reads – in part “We of APNU-AFC, are pleased to thank the wretched PPP/C defeated, for the legacy of the few good things they passing over to us – the new governing Regime, between May 12th to 14th next. Despite our Campaign ‘busing we are happy to accept the new Nursery Schools just opened; the brand new Synthetic Track at the Leonora Track and Field Centre, etc. etc. We will decide, after certain Court Cases, whether we will accept the Taxpayers Marriott – or turn it into a Condominium for the comrades. Warmest thanks PPP/C. “All for unity in and out of power, yours truly APNU-AFC.”

  • FROM PNC SOURCES

Some folks cling to “PNC”, like others embrace PPP. No “APNU” nor “CIVIC” for them.

PNC die-hard: “If a Pandit or a Pastor or a Moulvi or a Rabbi running fuh President, dey would choose dey own to be wid them, right?’ And if a businessman or a Lawyer or a U.G. guy running fuh aafice dey would look fuh dey partnuhs to support them, right? So if Granger is a retired Army Brigadier, is wrang fuh some officahs to back e? Who bettuh fuh President? An who dan de best fuh be Commanduh–in-Chief, if nah de Brigadier?”

Another PNC comrade: “An was de Major General Joe Singh, as GECOM Chairman some elections ago, who did put some ole soldiers including Lowenfield right there! Dey now vex wid Joe Singh? Wid Lowenfield? And if doze officers en kick down door under Jagdeo, dey gun kick down door under Granger? Pure dotishness!”
