Amaryllis

Amaryllis is another amazing bulb plant that is simply gorgeous.

Scientific name Hippeastrum, Amaryllis is taken from the Greek word which means ‘sparkling’ and it symbolizes radiant beauty and love.

Amaryllis originated in the tropical region of South America and there are approximately 70 species that grow wild in the southern hemisphere.

20130922peggyMost of the Amaryllis plants sold on the market are hybrids. Amaryllis hybrids have been produced both in the USA and Europe particularly in Holland which remains the largest producer. These hybrids have impressively large flowers and there are approximately 3 – 6 flowers per cluster. They come in two-tone colours including red, white, pink and orange. In Brazil there is a blue variety. South Africa and Israel have also been producing their own hybrids.

Plant Amaryllis in well-drained soil in semi shade. Set the bulb so that the neck with half of the bulb sits above the surface of the soil. Press soil firmly around the base of the bulb and water lightly. Remember to keep the soil slightly moist until the bulb starts to grow. Introduce into full sun once bulb starts to grow.

Bulbs will produce strap leaves with solid stalks and trumpet- like flowers. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose or Osmocote Slow Release Plant Food.

Some of my Amaryllis are in bloom at present and there are more blooms coming. Like all bulb plants there is a rest period and then it comes right back up; this occurs several times a year.

Until next week, happy gardening.
