Bus driver flees after hitting elderly man

The police are looking for a bus driver who fled the scene after hitting down an elderly man at Paradise, East Coast Demerara yesterday afternoon.

Pedestrian Cecil Barnes, 78, of Lot 163 Marshall Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for observation following the accident. Relatives said he appeared not to be seriously injured.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News he was in a line of traffic at approximately 2.50 pm when he saw from his rear view mirror a Route 44 bus hit down Barnes. The eyewitness said the bus then drove off and without thinking, the eye witness added, he pursued the fleeing driver. The chase ended at a mechanic shop at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. However, the driver got away after abandoning his bus. “I collected his bus number and gave it to the police,” the witness added.

A taxi driver at Bladen Hall said he saw two cars chasing a bus and later found out that the bus driver had knocked down an elderly man before fleeing.

A source told this newspaper that the police were immediately contacted and have commenced a search for the bus driver. The bus carried licence plate number BPP 1853.

It was unclear where Barnes was headed at the time of the accident since his neighbour said he was at Annandale most of the day.
