Man fined for choking High Court guard

Tony Chung, who admitted to choking and threatening a High Court guard, was yesterday fined a total of $15,000.

Chung, who was arraigned on two charges of unlawful assault and a charge of threatening behaviour, faces two weeks in jail if he is unable to pay the fine, which was handed down by city magistrate Ann McLennan.

Chung, who the police said refused to provide any information about himself, was charged with assaulting and threatening Nalini Ramcharran.

The charges stated that the offences were committed on January 26, at Charlotte Street. A shaking Chung, who appeared to be sickly, simply told the court, “I guilty madam; guilty, guilty.”

Prosecutor Deniro Jones said Ramcharran was on duty on the morning of January 26, when Chung entered through the Charlotte street entrance of the court complex and stopped in front of her and choked her. He then went away and returned on two other occasions throughout the day and repeated the act. He also told the guard that he was going to deal with her.

Jones said Ramcharran reported the attacks on each occasion and in the last instance Chung was arrested by police on spot.

Further investigations were carried out and the man was charged.

Chung was fined $5,000 for each of the three charges.
