While social media has been abuzz with reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Guyana before the planned May 11th general elections, this is not so.

Director General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Elisabeth Harper confirmed to Stabroek News that the government has not issued any invitation to the Indian Prime Minister or External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Harper said that “the Government of Guyana has not issued any invitation.

The foreign minister of Guyana has not issued any invitation.”

Observers note that the Indian government would be wary of any high-level activities here bearing in mind the pending general elections.

President Donald Ramotar recently visited India during which the Indian Government agreed to fund the US$50M link between the East Bank and East Coast roads.

Modi also announced that India would fund an ocean-going ferry.
