Man caused girlfriend to lose eye -court hears

A city magistrate yesterday refused bail to a labourer, who is being accused of harming his girlfriend, causing her to lose an eye.

Jamal Stephens, 23, of Lot 51 Hadfield Street, Lodge, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm when it was read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The charge states that on January 26, at Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Stephens harmed Rickesha Cummings.

Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objections to bail but asked that it be substantial if granted, while telling the court that the injured Cummings lost her left eye.

Attorney Dexter Todd told the court that Stephens and Cummings are working to settle the matter. He said there is still a final agreement to be made but noted that it would be concluded soon.

Todd added that based on what he was advised by his client, Cummings is in need of financial assistance to have a second surgery performed on her eye. He said she is not blaming Stephens for her injuries and wanted him to be freed so he could be by her side to render the necessary support needed and compensate her in whatever way he can.

Todd said he believes that if the court sets bail at a substantial amount if would be only harder on Stephens financially.

Despite his arguments, bail was refused and the case was adjourned to February 2nd, when it will be called at Court 1.
