Miner shot, robbed on Thomas Street

A miner, Andre D’Abreu is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing a gunshot wound to his side after he and his friend were attacked by bandits at Thomas Street on Saturday night.

In a statement, police said that at about 10pm on Saturday, D’Abreu, 34, of Thomas Street, George-town, and miner Jason Ramjattan, 35, of Laing Avenue, Georgetown, were chatting on the roadway at Thomas Street when they were attacked by two men armed with handguns.

One of the men shot D’Abreu to his left side and they took away an undisclosed sum of money from his vehicle and a cell phone from Ramjattan and escaped, police said.

D’Abreu was admitted to hospital and investigations are in progress. No one has been arrested.

According to a relative of D’Abreu, she was sitting on a chair in her home on Thomas Street, when she heard a gunshot. “By time I could have look out, I see he friend running coming down the passage way telling me that the men hold he to the ground, place a gun to his neck and rob he and D’Abreu of their cell phone and so,” said the woman.

She recounted that she was also told that D’Abreu was running up the road and he was shot and she rushed out to check.

The woman said that the gunmen made good their escape with an undisclosed amount of cash from D’Abreu’s vehicle along with its keys.
