Two die in Potaro boat mishap, one missing

The search will continue today for an eight-year-old boy, the last of three persons who went missing when a boat overturned on Friday night in the Potaro River near Tumatumari in Region 8.

Stabroek News understands that sometime after 11pm on Friday, the boat with seven passengers bound for Micobie, also in Region 8, developed mechanical problems and overturned in the Potaro River.

The boat captain, identified as Dennis Ramascindo, a yet to be identified male and eight-year-old Jaden Pereira went missing while Silvia and Crawford Pio, Clementson Andrews, and Carl Joseph were able to get themselves to the riverbank from where they were rescued.

The unidentified body is at the Mahdia Mortuary.

Minister of Local Government Norman Whittaker told Stabroek News last evening that preliminary reports indicate that the boat encountered mechanical problems as it was heading to the Amerindian village.

He said that four persons sustained minor injuries while three including the boat captain were missing.

The Captain’s body was recovered on Friday night and the body of the yet to be identified male was found yesterday.

The child remains missing but searches will continue today for him.

The Region Eight Administration is assisting with the search and has provided financial, human and other resources to aid in the rescue efforts.
