Ex-cop shot dead for chain during robbery – police

At about 1500h. yesterday, police say that mini-bus driver Beepat Taijram, 28 years, of Albouys Street, Albouystown, was shot and killed during an armed robbery at Grove Public Road, EBD.

Investigations have revealed, police say, that Taijram was held at gunpoint by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, and had travelled in his motor vehicle as passengers from the bus park in Georgetown, and who demanded his gold jewellery.

Taijram resisted and managed to exit his vehicle at which point he was shot several times by the armed perpetrator.

The men then took away his gold jewellery and managed to escape, despite efforts by a member of the Guyana Defence Force who was in the vicinity and had fired rounds in their direction.

Taijram was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The investigations are ongoing.
