Bel Air man granted bail over house break-in charge

A Bel Air man was on Friday released on $150,000 bail after he appeared in court accused of stealing over $800,000 when he allegedly broke and entered a home.

Sherwin Rhias, 31, denied the charge which was read by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The charge stated that on November 8, in Georgetown he broke and entered the dwelling house of Nigel Mc Kenzie and carted off a quantity of items valued $833,000.

The defendant’s attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, pleaded with the magistrate to be lenient in considering bail for his client since he sells sweets for his livelihood and he has no pending matter or previous charges.

Although prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objections to bail, he requested that a substantial amount be attached to ensure that Rhias returns for trial.

Bail was then set at $150,000 with the condition that he report to the officer in charge of the East La Penitence Police station every Friday.

The matter was adjourned to March 2, and transferred to Court 5.
