Ex-court employee busted again over cocaine

Having completed a four-year sentence for drug trafficking last year, a former Georgetown Magistrate’s Court employee was yesterday again busted with cocaine this time as he attempted to board a LIAT flight for Barbados.

The 34-year-old man was searched by the Custom Anti-Narcotic Unit agents at the Ogle International Airport and the drug, two kilogrammes of cocaine unearthed in his luggage.

The Georgetown resident was one of the winners of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company’s Christmas promotion, last December.

When he was caught in 2012 the man said he was attempting to smuggle the drugs, 1.044 kg of cocaine swallowed as 86 pellets, to the Cayman Islands to help his sisters.

“It was a sacrifice I was making for me and my sisters,” the unrepresented man, who seemed dazed, calmly responded when asked, then, the reason for him committing the offence. “I will pay the price,” he added, while begging for lenience in the sentencing.

During sentencing, Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, noting that the man, was an employee of the court system, said by his actions he had brought great disgrace to it.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court sometime today.
