Gold miner charged with robbing co-worker

A gold miner, charged with robbing a co-worker in a violent attack, was placed on bail yesterday after he denied committing the crime.

Lloyd Burke, 33, who resides at Lot 6 Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty when he appeared at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court 1. It is alleged that on March 21, Burke robbed Dillon Crandon of a $2,000 chain and $10,000 cash at Arangoy, Cuyuni River.

The prosecution stated that the crime occurred around 3.30 am on the day in question, when Burke saw Crandon walking on a trail returning to the camp where they both work. It is alleged that Burke, armed with a piece of wood, forcefully took the chain and cash from Crandon. The matter was reported to the police and Burke was arrested and charged.

The prosecution objected to bail based on the seriousness of the matter and the penalty it carries. After listening to the prosecution’s case, Chief Magis-trate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted Burke $50,000 bail. His next court date is April 9.
