Vendor refused bail on ganja charge

A vendor was refused bail over allegedly having marijuana in his possession.

The prosecution stated that around 14:50 hrs, police acted on information they received and searched Sheldon Brown’s home where they found a bag with a substance identified as cannabis under the main stairway. Brown was told of the offence, arrested and charged.

Brown pleaded not guilty to the charge yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1. It is alleged that Brown had 54 grammes of cannabis in his possession.

Brown’s attorney, Paul Fung-A-Fat, explained that the 39-year-old man resides at 65 Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust in a building with multiple apartments housing six other persons. Fung-A-Fat said the cannabis could have been someone else’s, since the staircase where the substance was found is traversed and used by all the residents.

However, the court was told that Brown had told police, “It was lil old weed I fuhget out deh,” Brown was refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. His next court date is April 9.
