Four remanded over burglary

Four men were yesterday remanded to prison when they appeared in a city court jointly charged with break and enter and larceny.

The allegation against Channivnauth Persaud, Sunil Gaj, Jamal Jones and Andrew Calendar stated that between March 15 and March 25, 2015 they broke and entered the dwelling house of Nandkishore Dukhraj and stole two toilet sets, two sink sets and chandeliers, all totaling $98,000 in value.

After Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 read the charge to the men, they all entered not guilty pleas.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on March 15th, Dukhraj secured his home and left leaving all his property intact. However, upon returning on March 25th, he discovered a window located on the eastern side of his house missing. Upon doing checks, he discovered his property missing.

A report was made to the police, who later went to the house of Gaj, where a sink and toilet was discovered. He was subsequently arrested and further investigations into the matter resulted in the arrest of the other three defendants.

Mangru objected to bail, while noting that more charges of similar nature are likely to be laid against the men. He also cited the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.

In a brief explanation to the court, Gaj said he purchased the items from someone and didn’t know they were stolen. The court also heard that Calendar faced a narcotic charge previously and was ordered to performed community service.

Mangru’s objection was upheld and the men were refused bail. The case was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where it will be called on Monday.
