Woman in court over alleged attempt to take over US$10,000 out of Guyana

A Brazilian woman was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail after she reportedly failed to declare that she had cash in excess of the US$10,000 limit while she was at the airport about to leave Guyana.

Marzia Silva Cardosa pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on December 4 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, she attempted to take US$11,000 out of Guyana after failing to declare to Customs that she had in her possession a sum of cash that was in excess of US$10,000.

The woman’s lawyer petitioned for her to be released on self-bail, since she has a fixed address in Bel Air Park and has children to take care of. The prosecution had no objection to bail, but asked that bail be set in a reasonable amount.

The woman was eventually granted $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and is expected to make her next court appearance on April 23.
