A Sophia resident is now dead after he was shot in front his children by armed bandits who invaded his home on Friday night.
Dead is Shawn Anys, 37, of Lot 743 ‘D’ Field, Sophia. Anys was killed in an attack by two persons, around 22:50 hrs on Friday. He sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and neck and died on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to a police press release, at about 22:50 hours on Friday, Anys went out into his yard to check because his dogs were barking continuously. He was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. During the confrontation, the police said, he was shot to his body by the perpetrators who then entered the home and took away a laptop computer, two cell phones and $40,000 and escaped.
At the time of the ordeal, Anys who owned and ran a small grocery shop located in front his residence was at home with his four children: Mark, Shakean, Shcoola and Lakeya Anys. His eldest, Mark, was also threatened by the men, while Shcoola was asleep and the two others were awake. His wife, Ami (only name given) was attending a birthday party when she received the news from Mark.
Speaking to this newspaper, Mark Anys, said he was doing some schoolwork when he was asked to see if someone was at the shop to purchase something since the dogs were barking continuously and it was customary for persons to visit the shop after it closed. After checking, Mark said, he informed his father that someone was already in the yard.
He said his father then opened the door and was confronted by two armed men, one of whom shot him to his chest and then to his neck. The men then ran into the house and while one pointed a gun at Mark, the other ransacked the place. After the entire ordeal which lasted for less than five minutes, they then made good their escape on foot through the back fence with cash, five cell phones and a laptop.
Mark, who is traumatized by the ordeal, said he then saw his father laying on the ground in pain and bleeding profusely. He called his mother and the police while he took a rag to try and stop the bleeding.
This, he said, didn’t help but his mother then arrived with the police and rushed his father to the hospital. He succumbed on arriving there.
Investigations are ongoing.
