Tourism Authority hosts health and safety workshops

The Guyana Tourism Authority began a series of health and safety workshops on April 29, 2015 for all stakeholders in the tourism industry.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, the workshops are intended to educate the participants on health and safety in their respective lines of duty.

Course facilitator and Senior Operations Manager, Yvonne Ramsay is expected to inform attendees of the concerns of tourists and the related liabilities attached in a series of workshops. The first workshop was for a half day’s duration at the Ministry of Tourism Industry and Commerce’s boardroom in South Road, Georgetown and had in attendance 39 individuals and 14 agencies from the travel industry. Other workshops of varying lengths will also be hosted at several business locations.

Participating in the event were drivers, hotel staff, activity suppliers and managers. This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Guyana Tourism Association (GTA), Explore Worldwide, Caribbean Airlines, Wilderness Explorers and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG).

THAG’s President Shaun McGrath said online data proved safety is the number one priority of tourist when visiting a country. Further, McGrath said businesses which operate at international levels must uphold international standards.

Five tour companies from the United Kingdom were expected on April 30, 2015 as a part of a familiarisation trip to Guyana.
