Providence duo remanded over ganja trafficking charge

Two residents of Providence, East Bank Demerara were yesterday refused bail when they appeared in a city court facing two joint charges involving the possession of narcotics.

Suzie Ann Rowe, 52, and Andrea Cupidore, 29, pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of narcotics when they appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 11. A man was also arrested but was later released on station bail. He was not present in court yesterday and an arrest warrant was issued for him.

It is alleged that on May 1, at Providence, the duo had in their possession 33 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. They are also accused of having in their possession .5 grammes of cocaine.

Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru had no objection to bail being granted for the second charge but objected to bail for the first charge, stating that special reasons must be provided to the court.

Mangru said that on the day in question when police went to the house, narcotics were found in a room by Constable Thomas in the presence of all three defendants. He said that when showed the illegal substance, Rowe admitted under caution that it belonged to her. However, a further search was conducted and they were all arrested.

Attorney Adrian Thompson represented the defendants. Thompson applied for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum, saying he was informed that the alleged illegal substances were found in the house which consists of several rooms that are accessible to several other persons apart from the defendants.

After listening to both sides, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $20,000 each on the second charge and denied bail on the first.

The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for June 5.
