Gizmos and Gadgets seeking more corporate support for city clean-up

Gizmos and Gadgets is seeking to get other companies on board to support the clean-up of the city.

Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday, Divya Sieudarsan, Marketing Manager of Gizmos and Gadgets said she along with the owner of the store Ravi Mangar had come up with the idea of placing bins in the city and getting other businesses to help clean up.

Sieudarsan, who is reigning Miss India Guyana, added that they were motivated to continue the activity and take it further after the clean-up and restoration drive that was launched after the swearing-in of President David Granger.

Under the company’s “Garden City Restoration” project, the staff at Gizmos and Gadgets started the clean up last week with cleaning around the store building and then moving on to the parking lot located opposite at the junction of North Road and Waterloo Street. This task is almost completed and their next target is Waterloo Street.

They are planning to continue cleaning at least once every three months. During cleaning, they will weed the grass around the areas, pick up garbage, trim trees and even plant new ones.

The company plans on taking the lead role in cleaning and adopting the Waterloo Street area. Other businesses and groups, such as “Let’s Keep Georgetown Clean” are also supporting the initiative.

Stabroek News was also told that Gizmos and Gadgets, with the support of the Mayor and City Council, will try to place bins around the city so that citizens will use them instead of throwing their litter on the ground. A hotline number was also created and signboards will be put up to educate citizens about the consequences of littering. This is an effort to decrease the amount of waste materials found on the streets of Georgetown and beyond.

Sieudarsan stated that littering is her number one pet peeve and it has always been a personal goal and passion to beautify and upkeep her surroundings wherever she is and so joining in the restoration campaign is a natural progression.

“I also hope that all others from the pageant community, fashion and entertainment industry join in the cleanup efforts, either by joining us or doing their own cleanup efforts. There are numerous persons who look up to us as role models and this is one of the good examples that we need to set,” she added.
