Man dies in Akawini Creek boat mishap

An 18-year-old of Grant Burnt Bush, Lower Pomeroon River died on Monday night at Akawini Creek, Lower Pomeroon River after the vessel he was travelling in crashed into a tree.

Dead is Trevon Benn  called ‘Baby’ while his friend Jamul France escaped unharmed.

Speaking, with Stabroek News, the aunt of the dead man who opted to remain anonymous, related that her nephew and his friend were going to Akawini in a boat powered by a 40 horse power outboard engine when the accident occurred around 10pm.

“Baby and his friend was going to Akawini and he was driving and according to what I hear, he lose control of the boat and slam into a tree. The tree pin him down and his friend pitch overboard.”

The woman added that since persons do not live in the area, it took quite some time before help was rendered.

“I was told that till this morning (yesterday) the Captain of Akawini passed and saw them and then the family and the police were informed. When I went to the scene this morning, I see about five boats there and `Baby’ was pin down in the boat. They had to cut down trees to get to take him out because the boat run up in the bushes. Around 1pm today (yesterday) we bring out the body and it is at Suddie Parlour.”

Meanwhile, France said that he and Benn were going up the Akawini Creek when Benn attempted to manoeuvre around floating objects in the water and lost control of the boat which crashed into trees on the riverbank.

Police investigations are ongoing.
