Cops probing murder in death of Indian national

Police are treating the death of Indian national Amendria Singh, who was found with multiple stab wounds about his body on Tuesday night at D’Aguiar Park, East Bank Demerara, as murder, Crime Chief Leslie James said yesterday, even as his sister maintains that he turned the knife on himself.

Singh, 32, was discovered dead in his sister’s residence at Lot 80 Triscuit Square, D’Aguiar Park on Tuesday night, following a fight with her husband, Harkirat Singh.

Mrs Singh said her brother attacked her husband while they were having dinner, and they fought. He then turned the knife on himself after stabbing her husband.

James said Harkirat Singh, who is being treated in a private hospital, remains under police guard as they are investigating a murder.

A resident told Stabroek News that around 7.20 pm he heard Amendria’s sister screaming for help. He said the woman ran out of her house shouting that her brother and husband were fighting.

He said when he and other residents of the small gated community went to her assistance they saw Harkirat Singh coming out of the house with a gaping wound to his neck.

“Right away we carry him to the hospital but we didn’t know that her brother was dead,” the man said.

He stated that the woman’s brother was living with a mental disorder and they had tried to have him admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Psychiatric ward but were turned away. “The doctors at the hospital told them that he was stable enough to be out in the open and that he was no harm to anyone. Well, he harm somebody and himself now so all of this could have been prevented,” the man said.

When Stabroek News visited the home yesterday, a relative of the deceased man said her family chooses to remain silent on the matter. She, however, stated that Harkirat Singh remains in a stable condition at a private hospital.
