PPP/C protests in Port Mourant on Independence Day

Leaders of the People Progressive Party/Civic and its supporters marched on Tuesday from Whim Sideline on the east and Albion from the west to Port Mourant for a public meeting to again protest the recently concluded May 2015 General and Regional elections.

The gathering was addressed by former president Donald Ramotar and several of his colleagues inclusive of Anil Nandlall and Clement Rohee.

In addition to claims of a rigged elections, they called for the resignation of Dr Steve Surujbally as Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.

Ramotar in his address said “We are moving to the courts for the first time since we had elections in over 20 years” in a bid to contest the May 11 election result and said the election was deemed free and fair prematurely.

Nandlall commenced his address with the chant of “who must go?” And to which the crowd responded Granger! And in his reference to the government said, “We will battle with them at every street, Parliament and court.” In addition, he criticised the new government’s installation of twenty six ministers, the renaming of the International Conference Centre as the Arthur Chung International Centre and the freeing of 60 criminals without any public consultation all of which he described as the actions of “dictatorship”.

A promise was also made to the gathering that many such meetings will continue in the future countrywide.
