Kamarang miner, 64, drowns during operation

A 64-year-old Kamarang miner died yesterday after being trapped for some time under a quantity of loose earth while operating mining equipment under water in Quimenang River.

According to a source, Thomas Anton, 64, of Kamarang, was diving in the Quimenang River, Upper Mazaruni, when other miners observed that he had not surfaced for some time. A group of miners dived into the water to search for him and managed to pull his unconscious body out of the water.

The source said Anton was dead by the time they rushed him to the Kamarang Hospital. The accident occurred around 11:30AM.

A police statement said that Anton’s death was being investigated. His body remains at the hospital, awaiting an autopsy.
